13/9/1999

Primary school students in the Townsville-Thuringowa region now have the opportunity to use a special CD-ROM to help them gain a better understanding of one of the world's most precious natural resources.

NQ Water has sponsored the purchase of 40 copies of the CD-ROM titled Water A Teacher's Educational Resource, for distribution to local primary schools.

Produced by the Australian Water and Wastewater Association, the CD-ROM is a modern interactive educational tool, with colourful and easy to follow information about the water cycle.

Water Supply NQ Water Chairman, Ian Hamilton said both the AWWA and NQ Water acknowledge the great importance of educating young people in the need to mange the use of water in an environmentally sustainable way.

"This CD-ROM will help primary students understand the complete water cycle from rain to tap and will show why we can't just sit back and take water for granted," Mr Hamilton said.

Seven areas covered in the CD-ROM:

  • Case studies on Australian best practice water management
  • Careers in the water industry
  • Games to educate about the water cycle
  • Songs to entertain and educate about water
  • Water stories and poems
  • Teacher units
  • Files to accompany teacher units including over 100 pages of activity units
