CRC Water Quality and Treatment Workshop a First in Queensland 18/10/1999 Australia's foremost research institute into water quality and treatment has chosen Townsville as the location for its first workshop in Queensland. Members of the Adelaide-based Cooperative Research Centre for Water Quality and Treatment will hold their workshop this Wednesday morning at the Centra Hotel, following an approach by NQ Water. Water Supply NQ Water Chairman, Ian Hamilton, said nine members of the CRC management committee including its director, Professor Don Bursill, a world- renowned expert in the field of water quality, would participate. "We are delighted that the CRC committee has opted to visit Townsville, in apparent recognition of the region's active role in the water industry and very high level of water quality control. "It's hoped the workshop will lead to future close ties with NQ Water and the channelling of research by the CRC into areas of specific relevance to Townsville and Thuringowa," Mr Hamilton said. "The CRC was formed in 1995 under the Federal Government's Cooperative Research Centres Program. It is currently pursuing a $55 million drinking water research project, with the underlying themes of health risk reduction and water quality improvement." Mr Hamilton said NQ Water had invited 40 people to the workshop, including engineering consultants, government representatives, treatment plant managers and representatives of landcare and environmental protection agencies. A meeting of the CRC committee has been scheduled for Tuesday ahead of Wednesday's workshop, when the latest developments in catchment management and water treatment will be discussed," Mr Hamilton said.
