Residentent Urged to Observe Garden Watering Restrictions

20/10/1999

Water consumption in Townsville and Thuringowa has been on the rise in recent weeks and the current handling capacity of the Douglas Water Treatment Plant is being stretched to the limit.

NQ Water Chairman Ian Hamilton said a $9.5 million upgrade of the treatment plant was expected to be finished in December, increasing its handling capacity from 152 megalitres to 232 megalitres daily.

"Unless current garden sprinkler restrictions are observed, they may need to be tightened before the treatment plant upgrade is completed.

"Water restrictions governing the use of garden sprinklers have been in force for some time as an on-going measure to help avoid water wastage in the region," Mr Hamilton said.

Residents in properties with odd numbers are allowed to use sprinklers each Wednesday, Friday and Sunday. People living in houses with even numbers are permitted sprinklers on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.

No sprinklers are permitted on Mondays.
