Community Opinion to Play Key Role in Dam Decision

29/12/1999

Input from Townsville and Thuringowa residents will next year help determine whether or not Ross River Dam should be opened for recreational use.

An information and community consultation program designed to assess levels of support for opening the dam will be fully implemented after initial research into health, safety and environmental aspects are considered.

NQ Water Chairman, Ian Hamilton, said NQ Water remains impartial on the matter, however in light of public interest, has instigated the consultation process along with an investigation of all possible implications.

"Following appraisal of tenders, community consultation company Stratcom Communique Australia has been engaged to conduct the program. An independent review panel will also be established to respond to key issues.

"Approaches will include meetings with interested parties, static displays, a community forum, special telephone contact number and distribution of brochures and other material.

"The ultimate decision for or against using Ross River Dam as a place for recreation is expected to be made by NQ Water around mid-2000, but only after carefully weighing up public attitudes and a detailed assessment of all likely risk factors," Mr Hamilton said.
