Security Camera to Deter Plant Thieves

5/8/1999

Future efforts to plant more trees and garden beds at the Ross River Dam carpark would be backed up by the installation of a security camera.

Townville Thuringowa Water Supply NQ Water Chairman, Ian Hamilton, said two plantings of trees, flowers and ground cover plants by Water Storage Ranger Richard Miller, on embankments beside the dam carpark over the past 10 months, resulted in almost every plant being stolen.

"On the first occasion up to 100 plants disappeared one weekend and the second time about 300 plants went missing within two weeks. The culprits even cut through chicken wire that had been placed around the trees to get their hands on them.

"These gardens, with plants from the Townsville City Council nursery, were a special project of Mr Miller's to help beautify the embankments and to stop vehicles from driving down them.

"People with such a callous disregard for public property can take warning that their actions will not be tolerated.

"If Mr Miller instigates similar plantings at the dam again, a security camera will be in operation to help deter and identify thieves," Mr Hamilton said.
