NQ Water Achieves Highest Rating for Environmental Excellence 2/5/2000 NQ Water has achieved the highest possible international rating for environmental excellence in management of a water supply system. The rating, known as ISO 14000, has been awarded by accredited certification company Davis Langdon International Queensland DLIQ following an extensive environmental audit of NQ Water's assets, associated pipelines and plant. The audit covered all aspects of NQ Water's operations including Lake Paluma and Ross River dam and catchments, Ross River and associated infrastructure, Crystal Creek intake, Kulburn, Mt Louisa and Douglas reservoirs, Douglas and Mt Louisa water treatment plants and pumping stations and the Haughton Pumping Station and pipeline. NQ Water Chairman, Ian Hamilton, said NQ Water and Gold Coast Water are the only water authorities in Queensland to be accredited with the much-prized ISO 14000 certification. "News of NQ Water's success has created considerable interest amongst water authorities elsewhere in Australia, who are also seeking certification. Sydney Water is one that has contacted NQ Water for details of the scope of the system in Townsville and Thuringowa. "The methods used by NQ Water to collect, treat and distribute water in an ecologically sustainable manner, are consistent with the most demanding international criterion," Mr Hamilton said. "The rating has rewarded NQ Water's commitment to sound environmental management, such as to avoid adverse environmental impacts, promote the efficient use of resources and develop performance evaluation procedures. "Achieving the rating does not mean however, that we can rest on our laurels. NQ Water must continue to produce results that will satisfy annual environmental audits. "An ultimate benefit to come from NQ Water's adherence to strict environmental controls is the safe, quality drinking water that flows through the taps to local consumers," Mr Hamilton said.
