Water ski club trial on Ross River Dam

30/03/2001

Recent tensions on a small section of Ross River caused by overcrowding through increased popularity amongst recreational users. has led to a decision by NQ Water to extend the use of Ross River Dam by Townsville Water Ski Club for a trial period.

NQ Water Chairman Ian Hamilton said water quality on the dam will be monitored closely, however results from monitoring during strictly limited water skiing activity by the club on the dam over the past five months, have shown no measurable water quality impacts.

"Probably the greatest impact to public health and safety is the danger on Ross River presented by competing recreational users including water skiers, jet skiers, canoeists, rowers and children wading on the river's edge.

"Once there is less boat traffic on Ross River following the move of the water ski club, greater river access will be provided for other forms of recreation. Unrestricted access will also be made available at the boat ramp at Pioneer Park.

"To help manage recreation interests NQ Water has formed the Ross River Management Advisory Group, comprising representatives of local sporting associations, residents and relevant government agencies."

Mr Hamilton said over the next two months the group will develop recommendations outlining nominated areas to be set aside for particular activities on Ross River.

"In addition, NQ Water has two rangers at Ross River Dam, whose duties also extend to supervision of recreational use of Ross River. New by-laws awaiting approval, will give the rangers additional powers to maintain order on the river and at the dam.

"Attention will also be given to ensuring compatibility is maintained with the City of Thuringowa's River Precinct Development Strategy, which is currently at the conceptual stage. The strategy aims to promote full enjoyment of the river by the community through a wide range of options for local residents.

"Coupled with the recent $8.5 million upgrade of the Douglas Water Treatment Plant, these latest initiatives are part of NQ Water's on-going responsibility to manage Townsville/Thuringowa water assets in a way that continues to protect water quality, while addressing community service obligations," Mr Hamilton said.
