NQ Water to revamp Mag Island pipeline

06/12/2002

Bulk water supplier NQ Water, has made a commitment to improve the water supply to Magnetic Island.

Consulting engineers Maunsell Australia have been engaged to complete the preliminary planning and design solution to Magnetic Island’s long term water supply needs.

Options may include extensive repair works, a duplicate pipeline or even a reverse osmosis plant to turn sea water into fresh water.

NQ Water Chairman Ian Hamilton said the existing 5.6 kms of 400 mm polyethylene pipeline was laid in 1983 and was considered state-of-the-art at the time.

"This is the only water supply to Magnetic Island and a crucial piece of infrastructure," said Mr Hamilton. "Without it, Magnetic Island would not be able to function. NQ Water is not prepared to take that risk."

"The pipeline is nearing its use-by date and now requires a considerable amount of maintenance. The Board recognises the need and has acted decisively to remedy the situation.

"This decision will help underwrite further residential, commercial and tourism growth on what is one of the north’s greatest destinations."

Deputy Mayor and local councillor Cr Ann Bunnell welcomed NQ Water's announcement that it is taking steps to secure the island's water supply.

"The water pipeline is one of the most vital service links to the island and the commitment from NQ Water to improve the service is great news to the
local community," Cr Bunnell said.

The planning program is expected to be complete by March 2003. It will detail timeframes and costs of the various opportunities available to NQ Water to improve the provision of water to Magnetic Island.
