Good news for North Queensland

18/12/2003

NQ Water welcomes the State Government's announcement on the successful outcome of negotiations for funding for the Ross River Dam upgrade.

Commenting on the government commitment of two-thirds of the actual upgrade cost, NQ Water CEO Ken Diehm said the green light would enable NQ Water to implement its plans for the five-stage upgrade.

Expressions of interest will be sought shortly for design and construction.

"We have been negotiating with the State Government for several months, based on the upgrade requirements identified by a panel of international experts and the need to ensure the safety and wellbeing of the people of Townsville and Thuringowa," said Mr Diehm.

"Many of the problems stem back to the design and construction of the dam, which were overseen by the State Government, and therefore NQ Water sought a significant contribution to enable the works to take place."

The upgrade, which will occur over a five-year period, will bring the dam into line with new international safety standards and will secure the dam's position as a vital community asset.
