Green light to pipeline replacement

29/01/2004

The green light has been given on a major maintenance project that will see the main water supply system to Townsville and Thuringowa shut down for three days next week.

Today's testing of back up pumps has confirmed the integrity of the project, which is scheduled to start next Wednesday.

The pumps will draw between 60 and 80 ML a day straight from Black Weir into Douglas Water Treatment Plant allowing contractors to shut down the mains system from Ross River Dam.

They are connecting a new 320m submerged section of pipe that crosses the weir to the mains to replace the current structure which has is approaching the end of its operational life.

NQ Water Chair Ian Hamilton said the success of the plan depends on the cooperation of the community.

"NQ Water has devised alternative supply that includes the pumps, ramping up full supply from Mt Spec and filling all reservoirs in preparation for the work," Mr Hamilton said.

"We are also asking for the community's support to keep a lid on demand by avoiding all non-essential water use.

"Consumption is beginning to creep up since the last rains and we are especially appealing for residents and business owners to limit all outside use."

he appeal will be supported by a major awareness which began this week with the distribution of more than 50,000 letters and brochures to homes and business, said Mr Hamilton.
