Mains back on line

06/02/2004

Water is flowing again from Ross River Dam to Douglas Water Treatment Plant.

Contractors replacing an aging section of pipeline crossing Black Weir have worked around the clock over the past three days to connect a 320 metre, 160 tonne replacement pipe.

Work was completed at seven last night to allow the pipe to be filled and pressure tested.

After successfully testing, the system was handed over to Citiwater and normal operations resumed mid-morning.

NQ Water Chairman, Ian Hamilton said the urgency of the project could not be underestimated.

"This system handles 80 per cent of the water supply to Townsville and Thuringowa and is critical infrastructure," he said. "The section of pipe was aging and there was no option for us but to replace it."

"We are very appreciative of the part the community has played.

"Residents and businesses kept consumption down and householders in the immediate area of the works showed a lot of patience in the face of the disruptions that come with a construction site."

Mr Hamilton said NQ Water was hoping to keep consumption at around 100 megalitres a day for the duration of the project. The community came through with flying colours by using an average 80 ML a day over the last three days, he said.

Backfilling, landscaping and revegetation work is now being undertaken to return the work sites on either side of the bank to original condition.

One lane of Upper Ross River Road closed around the connection point just down from Gollogly Lane, will be opened this afternoon.
