Tenderers called for Dam design ‘trials’

31/07/2004

The construction side of the Ross River Dam upgrade stepped up a gear today with expressions of interest called for the prequalification of tenderers.

NQ Water has opted for a process where construction groups short listed for the four remaining stages will work with project managers GHD-MWH, during the design phase.

It will provide for more efficient project management, says NQ Water Chief Executive Officer Ken Diehm.

"It is unique in terms of promoting a relationship between the project manager, the project designers and the construction arm, says Mr Diehm.

"The short-listed providers of construction services will work closely with the design team so they get a better appreciation of the challenges the project presents.

"As a result they will know our expectations when submitting their quotes. It also gives us a chance to assess the non-price selection criteria like teamwork and quality of staff.

"They will be paid for their input and will be expected to bid for the construction work in total at the end of the design phase."

Mr Diehm said a state government commitment to fund two-thirds of the upgrade meant NQ Water was able to quickly address issues to bring the dam up to international standards.

The construction phase of the project includes fitting spillway gates, complementing rock wall protection and constructing sand filters. The project is due for completion by mid-2008.

The EOI will be advertised nationally this weekend.
