Eco tourism funding boost

27/08/2004

NQ Water has given the local eco-tourism industry a boost in its budget.

Around $100,000 has been set aside to build a shelter shed and toilet facilities at the quarry site adjacent to Ross River Dam.

This will facilitate operations by three local eco-tourism companies that cover a range of nature based recreation activities.

It followed a feasibility study that investigated the tourism potential of the dam said NQ Water Chairman Ian Hamilton.

Townsville Tropical Tours is an existing operator in the region which will offer wildlife and bird watching safaris and Four Wheel Drive tours in the dam catchment.
NQ River and Road Tours is a developing company which will offer kayaking and educational tours catering for up to 60 children at one time.

Pop Sullivan is launching a new product called ‘Pop Sullivan’s Swan Lake Tours’. It includes plans to launch a 60 seat motorised vessel similar to those found in Kakadu. It is estimated that this activity alone will attract 200 visitors a week.

Mr Hamilton said both the structure of the businesses and the delivery of the tourism services addressed a number of concerns for NQ Water.

"The public has shown some interest in the dam as a community facility," said Mr Hamilton. "NQ Water is interested to increase access so long as water quality and public safety can be guaranteed.

"We are also conscious that the dam is host to a wealth of wildlife and other eco-tourism experiences from which the local tourism industry would benefit. NQ Water is committed to do what it can to encourage industry and help the local economy."

"These operators have shown their professionalism and capacity to provide a superior and environmentally sustainable service and we are confident of their long term viability."

NQ Water has announced plans to facilitate eco-tourism at Ross River Dam that includes building facilities worth $100,000 at the old quarry.

Three local companies have been named to provide nature based recreation activities. Pauline Clayton from Townsville Tropical Tours and Tony O'Connor from Pop Sullivans Sidetrack Tours, recently inspected the site with NQ Water Chairman Ian Hamilton.
