Black Weir Closed for Survey 18/10/2004 NQ Water will commission a survey of Black Weir to ensure the safety of the boating public. Maritime Safety Queensland has been contacted for help in providing technical support to identify all submerged objects in the water ski section of the weir. Black Weir has long been a dedicated recreation area and a popular venue for motorised water sports, general boating and fishing. Dropping water levels in the weir have prompted the move to invest in a survey of underwater hazards said NQ Water Environmental Services Manager Rob Hunt. "The low water level presents an emerging safety risk which we are forced to address," said Mr Hunt. "Black Weir is a reasonably large body of water and we are concerned that the most sophisticated survey technology is employed in identifying any and all submerged objects. "Once the hazards are identified, we can comprehensively assess the risk to users. Until that time, we have to close the weir to all motorised water sports including skiing and jet skiing. "We regret any inconvenience to the public and stress we have already contacted the authorities responsible for survey services to help address any issues that may arise." Permits normally allow for six water ski boats and jet skis on the weir at any one time in the morning and afternoon. The weir remains open to general boating and fishing though Mr Hunt advised users to reduce speeds.© 2003 NQ Water |
