Snag Survey Underway

18/10/2004

NQ Water has commissioned a survey of Black Weir designed to ensure the safety of the boating public.

Townsville based 'Aquamap Pty Ltd' is using a high tech Side Scanning Sonar to identify submerged objects.

Maritime Safety Queensland has been consulted for technical help said NQ Water Environment Spokesman, Rob Hunt.

"Black Weir has long been a dedicated recreation area and a popular venue for motorised water sports, general boating and fishing,' said Mr Hunt.

"Dropping water levels in the weir, to around one meter below full supply level, presents an emerging risk and have prompted the move to invest in a survey of underwater hazards.

"We took the advice of Maritime Safety in engaging a consultant who is appropriately trained in maritime survey and offers high level technical services in the area."

"Once the hazards are identified, we can comprehensively assess the risk to users."

Mr Hunt said he is expecting the initial interpretation of the survey results in around a week.

He said the weir would remain closed to all motorised water sports including skiing and jet skiing, until deemed safe.

Permits normally allow for six water ski boats and jet skis on the weir at any one time in the morning and afternoon.

The weir remains open to general boating and fishing though Mr Hunt advised users to reduce speeds.
