NQ Water Helping Turn the Tables for Youth 17/11/2004 Students from two Townsville secondary schools are helping in the reconstruction of Ross River Dam. Together, ten students from William Ross and Heatley High have completed two picnic table sets for a three hectare woodlands area between Ross River and Ross Park which is being rehabilitated as a community area. The students are all identified as 'short term learners' and the project has been intensive, said William Ross Behaviour Management Coordinator Liz Hennig. "This project was completed in a month and the students saw the results at the end of every day," Ms Hennig said. "It is exactly what we were looking for." "NQ Water not only supplied the project and materials, they also freed up the time of Ross Dam Ranger Peter Welldon, whose assistance for the three hours a day was invaluable. The kids looked up to him. "It is a very generous offer by NQ Water and will help build a sense of pride and commitment in these students who learn best by hands on activities." The students learned to use power tools and developed skills including concreting and painting during the course of the project. NQ Water was glad to be able to give something back to the community, said Chairman Ian Hamilton. "This project promotes the values of Ross River and is a constructive experience for these young people," Mr Hamilton said. "It is a very positive contribution."© 2003 NQ Water |
