NQ Water Votes for Eco-access 03/12/2004 Ross River Dam will be opened to the public for eco-tourism activities only. NQ Water again considered the question at its Monday (29 November) board meeting following representations advocating fishing on the dam. But all argument weighed in favour of targeting public use on the dam towards eco-tourism said NQ Water Chief Executive Officer Ken Diehm. "NQ Water considered the issue for a second time following representations made by sections of Thuringowa City Council," Mr Diehm said. "For the same environmental, public safety and cost reasons, NQ Water has again affirmed its commitment to eco-tourism. "The arguments were reconsidered but our research conducted into the practicalities and limitations are conclusive. There should be no fishing on the dam. "Furthermore, NQ Water is committed to developing Black, Aplin and Gleeson Weirs for public use by investing in amenities and fish stocking. "The weirs are among the most heavily stocked impoundments in Queensland for barramundi and a far more appropriate place to focus the fishing effort." NQ Water is in the process of awarding three permits for eco-tourism activities on the dam. They include wildlife and bird watching safaris and kayaking and educational tours. 'Pop Sullivan's Swan Lake Tours' is also investing in a 60 seat motorised vessel to conduct tours of the dam similar to those in Kakadu National Park. Mr Diehm said these activities were consistent with NQ Water's management plans. He said unrestricted access to the dam by fishers would also compromise the commercial viability of these businesses.© 2003 NQ Water |
