Ski Snags Cleared 08/12/2004 Hazards to water and jet skiing on Black Weir are being removed by NQ Water. Townsville based dive contractors, The Dive Bell are using hydraulically operated underwater chainsaws to crop 15 snags in the area of the weir assigned to motorised water sports. NQ Water has allocated $30,000 to remove the hazards which emerged when water levels dropped to more than one metre below full supply level. NQ Water Environment Manager Rob Hunt says the snags were identified using sophisticated sonar equipment. "Black Weir acts as an emergency supply of water," Mr Hunt says. "NQ Water also facilitates its use as a popular recreational asset. "In that case, the health and wellbeing of users is our prime concern and we take those responsibilities very seriously. "Recognising that the weir is a multi-use facility we are cropping the snags so they no longer present a threat to boating, but remain as fish habitat." He says the work should be completed within a week when normal permitting conditions governing the use of Black Weir will apply. Permits allow for six vessels on the weir at any one time in the morning and afternoon. "Until such time as NQ Water is certain condition are safe for users the weir is closed to all motorised water sports including water skiing and jet skiing," Mr Hunt says. Mr Hunt says the level of the weir is still low and all users should exercise caution when navigating in all sections of the weir.© 2003 NQ Water |
